Hairy Frogfish - Masters in disguise Many underwater photographers who visit the Dauin coast request dive sites where they have a better chance of seeing frogfish. One of the most sought after frogfish is the Hairy frogfish, also called the Striated frogfish because of its striped and spotted patterns. This frogfish, growing up to 15-20 cm, has the craziest lure of the frogfish that we find here in Dauin. It resembles a worm and can have multiple appendages, sometimes even swelling to a larger size when luring prey. The Hairy frogfish is great at using camouflage to blend in with its surroundings. Depending on the algae or soft coral in the area, this frogfish will grow hairy or filamentous appendages, usually the length or texture of the surroundings. Sometimes the white variation of this species wont be hairy at all and might have a small layer of peach fuzz instead! Hairy frogfish are commonly found in the sand, algae, or areas with rubble and can be found in the Indo-Pacific, both coasts of Africa, and the western Atlantic ocean. Although frogfish are hard to find in general, this species is one of the best camouflaged frogfish, so finding it is always a treat and can make for some great photographs. Next time youre out muck diving, double check any clumps of algae – there might be a Hairy frogfish hiding next to them!
