Half of local authorities in England and Wales, including a number containing National Parks, have cut funding for buses in the current financial year, with more than £9m wiped off support for services. Research carried out by the Campaign for Better Transport shows that since 2010, local authority funding for bus services has been slashed by 15% (£44m) with more than 2,000 routes either being axed or reduced. Among the local authorities making the deepest cuts during the current financial year are North Yorkshire, Cumbria. Dorset, Nottinghamshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. Ruth Bradshaw, our Policy and Research manager, said she was particularly concerned about what this means to National Parks, given that two authorities (North Yorkshire and Cumbria) making the largest cuts include National Parks. This is likely to have a significant impact on services in the North York Moors and Lake District National Park Authority, she said. Martin Abrams, CBT Public Transport Campaigner, said the Government needed to wake up to the crisis facing buses.
