Halfway into the 2012 Spartan Ultra Beast I caught a root going - TopicsExpress

Halfway into the 2012 Spartan Ultra Beast I caught a root going high speed that laid me out flat, landing me on a rock that split my knee open quite badly. I managed to hobble into the pit area completely gushing blood, staring down the barrel of another grueling 4 hours, 14 miles, 12,000 feet of elevation change and 35 obstacles still ahead of me, all the while thinking my race was over as I had failed to pack a first aid kit. Receiving any outside help meant a DQ. By amazing luck my friend and fellow racer Ang Young Reynolds came to the rescue offering up just enough to cover the wound and slow the bleeding so that I could get back out there and do what I do best. The result of that day was a badly infected wound that would scar over thickly in possibly the worst place imaginable for an obstacle racer. Ive since reopened this scar at least a dozen times. But it ends in 2014. After this racing season, I intend to remove it from my list of handicaps. Ive consulted with Frank and it appears there are no critical nerves or vascularity in the area, and only some connective tissue that Im pretty sure I can avoid. Surgery date is set for mid-November. Would any surgical/medical professionals care to chime in or strongly advise against this? What should I use for local anesthesia?
