Halifax BIII HD-D – LV936 ~ 466 Squadron RAAF On 4th November 1944 at 1940 hours and at a height of 17,000` Halifax BIII serial LV936 with a crew of six Australians and one British Flight Engineer, was struck by anti-aircraft fire or ‘flak’ as it is known. LV936 rolled inverted and exploded in mid-air crashing near the town of Windrath, Neviges, Germany. Four RAAF crew members lost their lives. The pilot (J Herman RAAF) found himself in freefall without a parachute as the aircraft had exploded and fell apart around him. At approx. 5000` above ground the Mid-upper gunner (J Vivash RAAF) had just deployed his parachute and pendulum swung beneath the deploying canopy. Herman collided with Vivash and held on – all the way to the ground – suffering serious injury from Vivash falling on top of him. The two of them and the Flight Engineer (H Knott RAF) spent the remainder of the war as POW until liberation in April 1945.
