Halkların Demokratik Partisi-HDP Co Chair Selahattin Demirtaş - TopicsExpress

Halkların Demokratik Partisi-HDP Co Chair Selahattin Demirtaş spoke to ANF regarding the latest developments in Sinjar: He said that the invasion and occupation of Sinjar in August and the massacres perpetrated against the people there was one of the most painful incidents in recent Kurdish history. He added that the Kurdish forces had now acted together and carried out a successful operation against ISIS. “We must congratulate them, we believed this would happen, but we didn’t know when”, he added. Demirtaş continued, saying it was necessary to make this a lasting political victory by ensuring that the Yazidi (Êzidî) people establish their own administration. He added that Sinjar was part of Iraqi territory and that including it as part of Kurdistan would entail risks, but that leaving it at the mercy of Baghdad was also risky. He therefore called on Kurdish parties to support the setting up of an autonomous administration in Sinjar, rather than endeavouring to establish their own dominance there. Demirtaş added that it was unrealistic to expect Turkey to open a corridor to Rojava, as it was continuing to support ISIS. He said that instead of calling on Turkey, Kurdish parties should concentrate their own efforts. He added that the Kurds should free themselves from the mentality of dependence on Turkey. Demirtaş said that in contrast to the other parts of Kurdistan, the struggle in the eastern part, Rojhilat (Iranian Kurdistan), had not succeeded in gaining international attention. He condemned the executions carried out by the Iranian state of Kurdish activists, stressing the cruel nature of the state and the experience it had gained over the centuries in Kurdistan. Demirtaş said the Kurds in other parts of Kurdistan had not done enough to support the resistance there, adding that Iran was also a threat to Rojava and South Kurdistan. He added that national unity was not possible without the inclusion of Rojhilat and bemoaned the fact that the National Congress had not assembled, as it would have addressed the issue. He concluded, saying: “the world may close its eyes and ears to what is going on, but the Kurds must not follow suit.”
