Hallo, Kate. The Gardeners’ Forum answer to your question is that the fastest way to provide screening is to buy mature plants and it is possible to buy plants that are already two or three metres tall and probably already at their maximum height. Buying a young, fast growing plant is much cheaper but once it has reached your required height, it will carry on growing and create a lot of pruning work every year. Bamboos are a typical example, but if you can use the prunings in your solid fuel burner, you’ll have a regular source of cheap fuel. Transplanting mature plants can be a tricky business and some may not survive. So call on the expertise of your chosen grower for a suitable specimen. At least that will give you some comeback if their plant does fail. If your planting area is wet, bog plants often grow profusely but if it is clay, look at Phormium tenax or- New Zealand Flax with its great evergreen fans of sword-shaped leaves up to 10ft long in green, purple or many variegated varieties. These plants will grow up to 12ft across with flower spikes up to 12ft tall. Incidentally, the Maoris used the leaves to weave all kinds of things. Buddleia can grow to 3m in a couple of years but do not provide a thick screen. One option may be to erect trellis panels, which in themselves provide screening and then plant a fast growing rose such as Rambling Rector or Seagull. Good luck with your choice!
