Halloween Tip #5! Empowering your children to make healthy decisions with their food is the ultimate way to prevent food hangups later in life. Since no parent wants to see their children struggle, try a little encouragement for them to experiment with their natural inclination towards independence. Halloween can be a tricky time of year to exercise trust for many parents – and for good reason. All the high fructose corn syrup and junky sugar is not healthy! We suggest this – allow your kids to eat what they want on Halloween night. Many of them may actually eat too much and feel sick! But this consequence actually teaches kids that there is a limit. Learning that food is powerful and has a strong effect on our bodies is an important life lesson. Take the leftover candy that wasnt consumed on Halloween night and put it in a bowl. Each kid in the family should have their own bowl. Allow each child to choose (1) piece of candy each day and let them choose when they will have it (with lunch at school, after dinner with the family etc). Alternatively, you can play the famous game of Switch Witch where your children agree to trade their candy (or a lot of it) in for a toy or non-food treat. Mom or Dad then switches the candy out and replaces it with a toy. This is a great way of teaching your children to appreciate the value of things. It also helps them learn how to make savvy decisions – a delicious treat for all parents! Be safe and have fun! PS--I would love to see your costumes! Share them here tonight or tomorrow!
