Halloween and Pan kui kyoso パン食い競争 Just to remind my lovely Americans friends, who often think Halloween is a modern invention from the USA, that it has far older origins in Celtic Ireland and Scotland. See link below. Your welcome! And for my lovely Japanese friends, the well known undo kai game Pan kui kyoso パン食い競争 also has far older origins - right back to Roman and Celtic culture mixing in early Britain. Here is a photo of Japanese playing it recently, and then look closely at this painting from 1833. They are playing the same game in the middle of the painting. Its Snap-Apple Night, painted by Irish artist Daniel Maclise, of a Halloween party in Blarney, Ireland. Snap Apple is the name of the game of trying to get a bite of an apple on a string, a game often played at halloween. The kids nearer are also playing apple dooking. Trying to get an apple out of a big pale of water with just your teeth, no hands allowed. You get very wet! Another one is trying to land a fork IN to an apple by dropping it from your mouth while standing up. Again, no hands allowed - not easy! We played all these games when i was kid in Scotland - great fun. amazingdiscoveries.org/the-origins-of-halloween
