Halloween, is it just Harmless Fun? Even though Halloween can seem harmless, it does have dark pagan roots and as believers we should never celebrate fear and terror. Some of todays popular celebrations associated with Halloween have pagan roots stemming from the ancient Celtic festival, Samhain (Samhain is known by most folks as Halloween, but for Wiccans and Pagans its considered a Sabbat to honor the ancestors who came before us. Its a good time to contact the spirit world with a seance, because its the time when the veil between this world and the next is at its thinnest. ) Also the Druids ushered in the New Year, beginning on the evening of October 31, with the lighting of bonfires and the offering of sacrifices. As the Druids danced around the fires, they celebrated the ending of the summer season and the beginning of the season of darkness. It was also believed that at this time of year the invisible gates between the natural world and the spirit world would open, allowing free movement between the two worlds. Ephesians 5:7-12 Dont participate in the things these people do. For though your hearts were once full of darkness, now you are full of light from the Lord, and your behavior should show it! For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. Try to find out what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, rebuke and expose them. It is shameful even to talk about the things that ungodly people do in secret.(NLT) The Bible definitely speaks negatively about occultic practices, spirits, and witches and condemns not only the practice but also the people who are involved in it. As Christians, we are to have nothing to do with the occult. Tarot Cards, contacting the dead, séances, lucky charms, etc., are all unbiblical and can harm a Christians fellowship with God and open the Christian to demonic oppression. Most Christians know this and avoid these activities. Deut 18:10-12 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, 11 or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. 12 Anyone who does these things is detestable to the LORD… Christians should respond to Halloween with gospel compassion. The unbelieving, Christ-rejecting world lives in perpetual fear of death. Christians should use Halloween and all that it brings to the imagination--death imagery, superstition, expressions of debauched revelry--as an opportunity to engage the unbelieving world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. God has given everyone a conscience that responds to His truth (and the conscience is the Christians ally in the evangelistic enterprise. Christians should take time to inform the consciences of friends and family with biblical truth regarding God, the Bible, sin, Christ, future judgment, and the hope of eternal life in Jesus Christ for the repentant sinner. Christians are enlightened by the truth of Gods Word. Evil spirits are active and sinister on Halloween as they are on any other day of the year; in fact, any day is a good day for Satan to prowl about seeking whom he may devour (1 Peter 5:8.) But greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4.) God has forever disarmed principalities and powers through the cross Christ and made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them through [Christ] Colossians 2:15.
