Hampton & St Martins Rwy - The hamlet of Upham needed a sawmill to process logs being cut in the heavily-forested hills nearby. So, in a dramatic move, the locals moved the railway station, the main road and downsized the feedmill to provide adequate space for the Reid Bros. to set up their sawmill facility and use the railway to move both the incoming logs and the finished lumber. The sawmill is based very loosely on (or perhaps a better term is inspired by) plans from RMC magazine produced over several months in 2010. Instead of building a water-powered bandsaw mill, Ive chosen to cheat by using instead a steam-operated circular sawmill kit from Woodland Scenics as the drivetrain with a combination of Mt Albert scale lumber, Northeast Scale Lumber scribed siding, and Bar Mills - The #1 Kit. Stay tuned for progress reports
