Hamstring injuries are common in sports involving maximal sprints and acceleration, such as rugby, soccer and athletics. Recent research shows that eccentric hamstring strengthening exercises significantly reduce the risk of hamstring injuries. Particularly effective is the “Nordic hamstring exercise”, developed by a medical team in Norway. A study performed on 942 male professional and amateur soccer players showed that the injury rate was 71% lower in the Nordic hamstring exercise group.
