Hand crews carved fire lines near the top of the Palm Springs - TopicsExpress

Hand crews carved fire lines near the top of the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to keep the Mountain Fire away from the popular attraction, and to protect the mountain parklands linked by the landmark machines to the desert floor below, a spokesman said today. The action was taken because the Mountain Fire has consumed more than an estimated 27,000 acres and was moving toward San Jacinto Peak and the tramway today, fire officials said today. Firefighters were riding up the tramway from Palm Springs and then setting up containment lines, Bureau of Land Management spokesman Rico Smith said. Poor air quality led to the temporary closure of the tramway to the public Thursday, and it remained closed today.
