Hand me a mike, because this is what I want to say to any candidate for the FSU presidency: “I live ten minutes from the university. I’m on campus day and night. I see President Eric Barron everywhere, and not just at the big events, either, but the little ones as well. I’ve seen Eric and his wife Molly at poetry readings, the undergraduate research fair, women’s basketball games. When novelist Jennifer Egan read, the Barrons were in the audience—in the back, in jeans and sweaters. Everywhere you go, you hear people say, ‘Look, it’s the Barrons.’ If you talk to them, they’ll talk as long as you want. Their engagement with every aspect of campus life is genuine and intense, and the effect of that engagement on morale is incalculable. What will your approach be?”
