Hand signals – do you and you buddy have your own? Heres a little story about me and my buddies hand signals. While we were diving in Koh Chang Thailand we were being guided by a very nice Danish chap ‘J’ who’s English was impeccable by the way, as we rounded on the island we were diving, the viz got increasingly less and less. Now... me and my buddy have our own interpretation of the sign for bad viz… as ladies we kind of use the signal ‘look’ (fingers on mask) and then the signal for ‘tosser’ (we all know what that is without me spelling it) so there we were, casually swimming along taking photos when we could, M on one side of J our guide and me on the other. As the viz got worse M looked at me and did our bad viz signal , to which I nodded and repeated the signal back. Well.. poor Js eyes just widened and just let out a cloud of bubbles, tucked his head in and carried on diving, we thought it just a bit weird. On returning to base we were sat talking and ‘J’ mentioned about the bad viz; I asked him if he knew that we had acknowledged the bad viz with our signal, he looked a bit lost so I repeated the signal! The look of ‘OH! MY, I GET IT NOW’ was when I realised what we had done.. We had had ‘J’ in the middle of us and basically had both given the ‘watch while we Toss’ signal to which J had thought his luck was going to be in!!!! We all had a very good laugh over this and even with the best of intentions translation can get lost. So ladies and gents be warned of the intent of your signals. :)
