Handcare I ve been hearing a lot of complains of torn hands while getting to the Pull Up bar.. Here are some thoughts that you might find handy. Noone wants to do anything when it comes to torn hands. That shower when it initially happens is interesting too right?! So look after your hands and they will look after you. Worst case and you do get a little tear we’ve got you covered to get you back in action as soon as possible with minimal fuss. Prevention Correct Hand Technique The most common is going to be the pull ups and people tearing their hands on the bar. You want to think about having your pinky knuckle over the bar which is going to help keep your shoulders in a good position and also help prevent rips as it will make your wrist the hinge in the movement rather than your hand grinding round on the bar. 2 for 1 ! Awesome! Chalk “ Chalk will help you grip the bar better, but you don’t need to go elbow deep in the chalk bucket, emerging with arms like powdered donuts to hold onto the bar–A little bit goes a long way. The more chalk you use, the more your hands will stick to the bar. The friction on the bar is what causes hand tears, so go easy on it unless you want to look like you shook hands with a wood chipper. A light dusting followed by clapping your hands together is generally sufficient.” Shave those calluses This one is pretty self explanatory. If you have an excess of calluses then when your hands will rip easily and when they do tear they will take most of your hand with them. You want to keep that happy medium that are deep but smooth and supple calluses that protect the hands but remain intact when working. Worst case and you do rip then use these tips to help get you back into action! 1) Cover your hands with a bandage immediately after the WOD 2) when you get home, cut the flap of skin off and wash your hands with soap and warm water. Get the chalk and dirt out. If you can handle it, soak your hands in warm water with salt for 15 mins. It’s painful, but it helps. 3) Let the wound air dry 4) Put antiseptic cream on the wound overnight, and cover your hand with a bandage or sock to keep it from getting everywhere. 5) Apply lotion, to keep it from cracking and drying. It should be back to normal within a few days. Thank you all for taking the time to go through this. C u in the Box Your Coach AJP
