Hands in prayer according hanbali madhab: 1. Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal Rahimmulah, when giving his predominant position on the placement of the hands in prayer, said Yahya ibn Zakriyya ibn Zaiidh narrated from Abu Said from Abdur Rahman ibn Ishaq, from Ziyad ibn Zaidas-Suwaii fro Abu Jahaifah that Ali ibn Abi Talib said The Sunnah is placing the right hand on top of the other under navel (Masail ul Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal pg 72-73. The Imam taught this way of prayer to his sons and even included all the ahadith on this subject in his collection Musnad. This is taken from Ar-Rawd ul-Murbibi-Sharhi Zad il Mustaqni pg 79-81) 2. Imam Abdul Qasim Al-Khiraqi Rahimullah, was taught by the sons of Imam Ahmad. He states the following, He places his right hand on the left wrist, then places them both under the navel (Mukhtasar al-Kiraqi pg 19-20) 3.Imam Mahfuz al Kalwadhani Rahimullah, And he should place his right hand on his left wrist, then both under the navel. (Sharh ulibadat il-khams pg 148-159 4. Imam ibn Aqil al-Baghdado Rahimullah, gave us his ruling, So he should place his right hand on his left wrist, the put them both under the nave;. (At-Tadhkirah fil Fiqhi ala Madhhab il-Imam Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Hanbal, Book of Prayer, under the chapter of the Description of Prayer) 5. Imam Muhammad al-Baqubi Rahimullah, ruled So the worshipper should put his right hand on his left wrist and place them both under the navel. And this is easier for the worshipper and more tender in front of his Lord and easy. There is no difficulty in it, but if there were to place them differently, there would be difficulty. Imam Muwaffaq ud-Din ibn Qudamah Rahimullah, reminds us And regarding the prasieworthy actions of the prayer, there are 32 in number.... one of them is placing the right hand on the left and putting them both under the navel. Imam Fakhr ud-Din Ibn Taymiyyah Rahimullah (The grandfather) gave his ruling that placement for the hands is the right over the left, both of them below the navel. (Ghayat ul-Matlab fi Marafat il-Madhhab pg 51-52 8.Imam Majf ud-Din ibn Taymiyyah Rahimullah, an authority and one of the two highest voices in the legal school of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal, stated, He should place his right hand over his left wrist and then put both of them under the navel. (Al-Muharrar fil-Fiqh ala madhhab il-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal. vol. 1 pg 51-52 9. Imam Taqi ud-din ibn Taymiyyah Rahimullah, although not an agreed upon by voice, taught Imam ibn ul-Qiyaam, who reproduced his opinions in his own words. The quote below by Imam ibn ul-Qiyyam is equally attributable to Imam ibn Taymiyyah. (Badai ul-Fawaid, vol. 3 pg 72-72) 10. Imam ibn ul-Qiyyam Rahimullah, although not agreed upon or authorative voice, counsel believers, And Ali Raditala Anh, had said that the sunnah was to place the right hand on the left under the navel. The Imam also said, And the authentic position is the hadith of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Imam ibn ul-Qiyyam finally stated in this regard, Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal considered it disliked to place the hands on the chest in prayer due to a hadith of the Prophet Sallala Hu Alahi Wa Salaam where he forbade it.
