On Friday, October 10th, 2014 the President will be holding a press conference at Bonelli Park in the San Gabriel Valley to announce his plan to use an executive order to create a San Gabriel National Monument for over half a million acres of mountain and foothill land. Friday, Oct. 10 2014 at 11:00am -2:00pm Main entrance at Bonelli Park 120 E. Via Verde Drive San Dimas, CA 91773 At the last rally we had 150 people attend, and we hope to have several hundred more at this event. Please bring a friend. Please arrive early for the press and be prepared with a sign. Suggestions: Be non-partisan. Use your creativity while keeping the message focused on the topic--- No Antiquities Act, Hands off our Mountains, No National Monument, Water Rights, Save Mt. Baldy, No Executive Order, Where’s the Public Input?, What Happened to the Democratic Process?, etc. The President is expected to hold his presentation at 1:00pm, and we want to be there early to speak to the press. This will be the 11th National Monument that President Obama has designated with an executive order. Directions and parking info are listed below: Rumor has it that the Via Verde Dr. exit off the 57 freeway may be closed. It is the most direct route, however be prepared with an alternate route if it is detoured. We will send an update if we receive new information. Bonelli Park is located on the Northeast corner of the 10 and 57 Freeways in San Dimas, CA From Pasadena-210 to 57 and exit Via Verde Redondo Beach, etc. 10 East to 57 North and Exit Via Verde From the East-10 to 57 North and exit Via Verde From San Diego, 5 north to 57 north, cross over the 10 freeway and exit Via Verde Dr. At the exit of the 57 and Via Verde, on the NE corner, there is a Park and Ride lot. If it is full, there is an industrial park across the street on the SE corner with a large parking lot and no parking restrictions. We will also be able to shuttle you from parking that is further away. The demonstration will be at the main entrance to the park. Additional Background Information: There is currently a bill in congress, HR4858, by Rep. Judy Chu (CA D-27) for a San Gabriel Mountains Recreation Area. This bill is in a congressional review committee and has not yet received a vote. This bill does not have enough support to get out of committee, so President Obama has stated he will use the Antiquities Act of 1906 to designate to area a national monument instead. The two designations (Recreation Area vs. Monument) are not the same, however, there will be no studies or public outreach performed on the impacts of a national monument. The National Monument designation was announced to stakeholders by Rep. Chu on August 18th, 2014. Only two months later, Obama is planning to sign it into law. Fast-Tracked National Monument Plan bypasses democratic process. (Alternate routes include Via Verde exit from 10 frwy, Covina or Arrow Hwy exits from 57 frwy. Please carpool; suggested meet up spots include San Dimas Target lot, Eastland lot) ````````````````````````````````` A National Monument Designation will not bring additional funding or resources to the Angeles & San Bernardino Forests. If Rep. Judy Chu tells you it will be bring more money, its not true. Federal Land Management (National Parks Service, BLM & National Forest Agencies) budgets all come from the same bucket, grants come from the same bucket. Grants & sponsorship are hard to come by when you are competing with National Parks & Monuments such as Yosemite and Yellowstone, just to mention two!! Access will be restricted, private property owners will become subject to eminent domain, water rights will be compromised, OHV (Motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs) will not be allowed which also limits family recreation, businesss special permit usage will be compromised and we dont need yet another level of government to manage our National Forests. Democracy allows for the voice of the Public to be heard - NOT being told what will be!! L. Wucherpfennig The San Gabriel Mountains are no more threatened than the Cleveland National Forest or San Bernardino Mountains. They are of no historical significance and the proposed area is unjustifiably large. As a result, President Obama would be unlawfully exercising his right under the Antiquities Act and abusing a law that is likely to be repealed for this very reason. R.
