Handt Hanson TWO TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10 | MARK 12:29-31 While the scribe only asks about one commandment, Jesus answers with two: a version of the Shema from Deuteronomy 6:4-5, and Leviticus 19:18. The scribe agrees with Jesus’ answer, summarizes the two laws, and states that these together are better than burnt offerings and sacrifices. Mark tells us that the scribe has answered intelligently, or wisely, which contrasts the scribe’s assessment of Jesus’ answers as merely “good.” What do you think of Jesus’ answers? Mark ends the story by saying that the Kingdom of God is not far from this scribe. The reference to “not far” could be simply a reference to time. However, given that the scribe has not expressly believed in the gospel the way that Mark formulates it (Mark 1:14-15), it’s possible that Mark thinks the scribe still has a ways to go. This week as we focus on what God has in store, remember this: the future may be uncertain, but God’s love and forgiveness and faithful presence are not, which is why we can afford to lean into the future with great expectations.
