Hank Wedel and Ray Barron have been playing in Charlie’s Bar in Cork every Monday night for the last 20 years. I’m sure it must be some kind of record. I ran a club in the Meeting Place in Dublin on Friday nights for 5 years. Chicken feed. So Hank and Ray have been celebrating over the Summer by having people in to play with them, mainly people who have an association with the gig. I have had a long musical relationship with Hank, from producing tracks for his various bands to playing with him in ‘Small Town Talk’ to recording his song ‘Listen’ with Christy Moore. More relevantly I have spent many an enjoyable Monday evening playing in the corner of Charlie’s with him and Ray. For those who haven’t had the pleasure Hank is a singer, guitar player and songwriter and does them all in a very distinctive and highly enjoyable way. He has a great presence on stage and knows how to make a room full of people feel like they’re being looked after in a very musical manner. Ray is a great mandolin player who plays tunes from here there and everywhere, Venice to Venezuela, Portumna to Peru. They make a great team. So on Monday July 14th Vickie and I sat in with Hank and Ray in Charlie’s. We sang a song I wrote recently called Charlie’s Bar. ‘Let’s go play with Hank and Ray Down in Charlie’s Bar We can cross the river as the sun goes down They won’t run forever Just another fifty years We can tell our story as the wheel turns round’ We had a lovely night, a combination of playing new songs and playing old favourites. If you don’t know about Monday evenings in Charlie’s and you live within spitting distance then it might be time to treat yourself.
