Hannah and I watched the AP Music Awards show last night. Lots of young turks hitting the stage. She of course is very familiar with all of the groups (and was naming guitarists, vocalists, etc) and the songs. I know them through osmosis and for the most part it will remain that way. But what struck me most was that this event had tons of label & sponsor dollars, all of the preproduction one would expect, and yet both stage management and FOH sound was abysmal at points. I believe this comes about when emphasis on the TV trumps the actual live show, which of course is the foundation of the whole event. TV should document not steer the performance. Granted live events have their challenges, but even the first award was screwed up when the presenters went on stage without the name of the recipient, then had to request it, were given the wrong envelope, eventually getting the correct one after a spell. Imagine- the award being an afterthought at an awards show, like a wedding where the groom forgets the ring in his Camaro after a night of heavy drinking. Then there were the terrible mixes of the bands, repeated failure to turn on vocalist mics, gimmicks that were complete failures (i.e. having the crowd (mostly stage hands with a few volunteers) carry a drummer and kit about on a piece of wood during a solo that was poorly micd..) I really hate to moan about this stuff because I know what a debacle live shows can be, but this was really amateurish. We can give them points for trying to be out of the box, but like everything in show business that only works when it is done well. Otherwise its a joke. altpress/news/entry/announcing_the_first_ap_music_awards
