Happening now in New York: Tibetans and supporters protest in front of the United Nations building calling for China to end its violence in Kardze, Tibet. Did you know that Wangdak (the village leader whose arrest had sparked the peaceful protest) had protested the treatment of Tibetan women by a delegation of senior Chinese officials? The women had been ordered to perform at a welcome reception for the delegation and later told Wangdak that they had been harassed by the Chinese officials. After voicing his concerns, Wangdak was accused of organizing an illegal festival and prayer offering by supporting a local horse festival that has been happening for hundreds of years in the region. Kardze is now under lockdown. 10 Tibetans were injured on Tuesday in Kardze (eastern Tibet) after Chinese paramilitary police opened fire on villagers who were protesting the detention of Wangdak, their village leader (he was taken from his home in the middle of the night). Two have died in detention and others remain untreated. With no media in Tibet, news of this situation wont be reported unless we spread it by going out in the streets in front of our government building and in front of the Chinese consulates and embassies. Organize or join a protest to call on China to end the violent crackdown in Kardze.
