Happy 1st day of SPRING!! This is what Springtime in Alaska looks like to us! Is it an Alien? No, its a male caribou beginning to grow its rutting antlers!! It is nothing short of amazing how these, and other animals, including moose, shed their antlers in early winter only to begin growing them again in the spring. With each passing cycle their antlers grow larger then the previous year. The strength these animals possess to carry this yearly creation on their heads makes their shoulders and back impressively strong. Antler and Horn Trivia - The difference between antlers and horns is that antlers are shed each year only to begin to grow again in the Spring, and horns remain attached throughout the life of the animal, such as Dall Sheep, buffalo, cattle, etc. - Blue Ice Alaska
