Happy 2015 - This weeks Did you Know Flashback comes directly written from someone whom Kevin has influenced and wanted to write it from himself, please enjoy the read and thank you to this man for the sincerity.... :-) Kevin Chevell has has had the most positive influence on my life of any man. At the age of 23 in 1997 I wanted to make the most of my rugby league season and had asked my friend, Con a professional body builder, if he could do some extra training with me, which he did for a while before a move to the city would limit his involvement. He said that I should contact a man named Kevin Chevell, which I did. I remember my first conversation with Kev, even before he would start training me he wanted to know if I was keen enough to do the hard work. From the depths of my being I said that I would do whatever it takes. What I didnt realise at the time that whatever it takes, was a place I I I had never been before. At my first sessions Kev put me on an exercise bike and told me to do a 10km time trial. I started pedalling away at, upon reflection, a moderate pace. When I reached the 5km point Kev came over and checked the screen, he had a look of disappointment on his face. He said that if I was wiling to do whatever it takes, then whatever it takes starts right now. Kev gave me a time that he was expecting from me to finish in, a first grade rugby league player. I started pedalling faster, but realised faster wasnt going to be enough. Buy the time I finished, which was under the time Kev gave me, I knew that training with Kev was going to be the hardest training I would ever experience and that I, like I did on the bike that day, would have to dig deeper than I had ever dug before. My football immediately improved from that day on. Kev instilled a confidence in me that I never had before. Real Confidence, based on substance. He would push me physically beyond what I thought capable. With every challenge, came inner strength and a growing self-esteem. No longer turning to artificial things to make me feel good. I felt good from the inside. This to me is Kevs legacy, one that he leaves with the people that are lucky enough to say those magic words to him. I will do whatever it takes. In the off-season of 1998 I trained every day I could with Kev and came back the fittest of ALL the athletes. Physically I could do things others couldnt, but mentally I would do things that others wouldnt. The 1998 season was the best of my career. I signed a new deal with the Cowboys and moved to Townsville for the 1999 season. When I moved I knew that I wouldnt be able to train with Kev, I had to rely on my own self-confidence and not the confidence Kev instilled in me, being in his presence. The truth is that I relied on Kev. The move to Townsville was crushing. My football career was in tatters after playing only 12 games for my new club and terminating my 3-year deal on principle. I had reconstructive surgery on my shoulder for the second time, I remember flying down to Sydney alone, lying in my hospital bed, so lonely and my spirit being crushed with every passing minute. An experience that would influence my retirement 4 years later. In Jan 2000 at age 25 years, rebuilding my rugby league career was my top priority, so returning to Penrith was my obvious choice. An environment where I could rebuild upon my confidence again. I thought about seeing Kev at this stage, but I had decided that I needed to be stronger, rebuild my own confidence, and with the tools Kev gave me, I did, and I enjoyed a couple more years of success in my career. Upon retirement in 2002, age 28 years I wanted to emulate what Kev had done for me for others. I worked as a personal trainer for a couple of years, and now coach athletes. At age 40, I can confidently say that Kevin Chevell has shaped who I am, and I am damn proud of the person I have become. From the bottom of my heart Kev I thank-you. Jody Gall
