Happy 50th Matt Ratt; you are missed. Matt was such an important figure in the SB music scene; more than just a musician, he was our de facto punk rock messiah! I was honored to play my first show ever opening for Rat Pack at the Red Barn in Isla Vista, it was like being baptized in cheap beer and teenage sweat. Matt was irreverent & didnt judge you on how rich/poor/smart/dumb/ugly/beautiful/cool/lame you were, his door was unlocked & he welcomed anyone in who wanted to hang out & hear his fantastic war stories & witty asides or participate in his hijinx. He was no saint & for years was an accessible portal for many of us into the dark sides of rocknroll culture that most of us only hear about when fetishizing the likes of Sid Vicious, Burroughs, Keith Richards, Darby Crash, etc. When I look back fondly on my wildest memories (ones Im retrospectively lucky to have made through) Matt was often involved. He had a charm & magnetism that made people want to be around him & though I mostly lost touch with him towards the end of his life, its my understanding that he learned to channel his gifts into positive things, became a dedicated father, reclaimed his songwriting muse, got clean, and enjoyed life. Much love to his family, fellow friends & fans, we are his survivors & should all blast some Rat Pack today... youtu.be/4mDG0C1xVqk
