Happy 77th birthday today to Warren Beatty. Last year around this time my Zelig-like existence played out by my receiving a birthday bouquet with a card addressed to Warren. We share a mutual friend - and almost the same birthday - and the friends office got the bouquets mixed up. I wondered last year if he got one addressed to me and kept scratching his head wondering who the hell Kevin was. I worked at Paramount Pictures during the REDS era. I watched it a few months ago and it sure holds up. A great film. And watching Warren maneuver on the executive floor of the then G+W Building where I was a highfalutin factotum back then with a front row seat was not only a lesson in maneuvering but also in charm and pluck and determination and even a kind of courageous single-mindedness that all real artists must have to see their visions into being, especially those who must ply their art within the corporate trenches. Over the years since then our paths have crossed and he has always been such a gentleman, always curious, always courteous, always finally that most rarified of flirts (an instinctive and intellectual one).
