Happy 80th birthday to Sam Moore (born Oct. 12, 1934), who was the tenor vocalist for the soul vocal duo SAM & DAVE, with singing partner Dave Prater. Moore is a member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the Grammy Hall of Fame (for the hit Soul Man), the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and a Grammy Award and a multi-Gold Record award-winning recording artist. Sam & Dave were the most successful duo in soul music history. In 2008, based on a poll of other musicians, Rolling Stone magazine named Moore one of the 100 greatest singers of the Rock and Roll era. Moore has also partnered with many other recording artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Elton John, Phil Collins, Lou Reed, Conway Twitty, and others, on various live and recorded performances. Sam Moore and Dave Prater were both experienced gospel music singers when they met in 1961. The duo recorded for Roulette Records, Atlantic Records, and then Stax Records, where they produced their own records. Sam & Dave had ten Top 20 Billboard chart hits including Hold On! Im Comin, When Something Is Wrong with My Baby, Soul Man, and I Thank You. Most of their hit records were co-written by Isaac Hayes, who also backed them on piano along with Booker T and the MGs and The Memphis Horns. Prater died in a car crash in Sycamore, Georgia in 1988. Sam Moore still performs today and is scheduled to appear along with the Beach Boys Brian Wilson on Oct. 23rd at the 10th annual Dreamcatcher Gala at the Hamilton, Ontario Convention Centre. On his website (sammoore.net), Moore posted: Today I enter my 80th year on Planet Earth. I am one lucky and truly blessed son of a gun. Knock (on) wood...my health is darn good, my mind also, and the gift God gave me is in scary amazing condition.
