Happy Birthday, Angelica de la Riva! Action-packed day today (including buying TONS of Christmas Clearance candy) so its another last-hour submission to the #BirthdayQuest. Angelica is a breathtaking soprano who I first met and worked with a little over three years ago in New York City. It was for a concert series entitled Amazonas, performed in Weill Hall at Carnegie in conjunction with Angelicas main partner in crime: the awesome Guitarist, Nilko. Angelica is an absolute delight to work with. Weve had the chance to do several concerts and coachings together since that initial meeting. Not only does she have a fabulous voice, but she is a stunning performer as well. She has a fierce work ethic, and has a tremendous spirit and a great heart. She spent much of Autumn 2014 performing in her home country, and many exciting opportunities are continuing to come her way! For Angelicas #BirthdayQuest theme, I quote two pieces that we performed together at Carnegie. Both pieces are from composers who hail from her home country. Not only are they both beautiful works, but I was not familiar with them until I collaborated with Angelica. The melody of the first quote had similar qualities to a piece by a very famous composer, and youll hear my tribute to that in the opening of the theme. The composer of the second piece has an interesting story- even though he is Brazilian, he studied in Italy, and the piece that the second quote comes from has a very Italian musical flavor. I bring back the first quote at the end to finish the theme. As usual, these quotes are played in their original keys, but with different rhythms and surrounding harmonies.
