Happy Birthday, David Gordon-Johnson! David is a phenomenal singer and performer that I first met during my time in Cincinnati. We first worked together at the end of his high school years, and actually worked together in a variety of situations and venues. I worked with both his high school choir and a separate youth chorus for several different performances, and I also played piano for him for a local scholarship competition. Even back then, he had this crazy ridiculous high tenor voice, and I knew (and told him!) that with a little bit of time in a great college program, hed be unstoppable. Hes also incredibly versatile; hes great with Shakespeare, Musical Theatre, Improv, and much more. Thankfully, he not only was accepted into the perfect program for his voice (IU!) , but also with the most prestigious scholarship that IU has to offer! Weve had the chance to get together and catch-up/talk shop several times since he started school (often at Five Guys Burgers!) but there was one get-together that was at a piano. One of the songs he sang for me was never a particular favorite of mine in the past...Id played it a handful of times, but never found the performances interesting or compelling. Well, David knocked it out of the park, and not only do I enjoy the tune now, but Ill always associate it with him! So, this is the song I used for material for his #BirthdayQuest theme. I quote two passages to build the melody for the theme- as always, both musical quotes are played in their original key, but their rhythm and surrounding harmonies are different.
