Happy Birthday Joe Frazier A fellow they called Smokin’ Joe In his time battled many a foe Beating men of great bulk To a blood spattered pulp When he fought in the ring toe to toe He was born in a deep southern State Where he often had grits on his plate His family was poor Life was hard to endure But his will to survive was innate With his Dad he watched fights on TV And decided he wanted to be A boxer one day For the fame and the pay Like the future Muhammad Ali Joe left home at the age of fifteen To excel on the prizefighting scene Though his Mom disapproved Off to Philly he moved To be trained as a punching machine A man named Yank Durham saw Joe And he proved to be much in the know In the boxing profession Where speed and aggression Could garner a shitload of dough Joe rose up through the ranks undefeated And then for his country competed In the Tokyo Games Where he scrambled some brains Donning gold when his bouts were completed Later, back in the States as a pro He made many more rivals eat crow Then Ali got the shaft For denouncing the draft Causing years of unspeakable woe That’s when Joe got the heavyweight crown And was quickly a man of renown And the pick of the pack But Ali would come back And predicted that Joe would go down What ensued were three fights for the ages Well covered in all the sports pages Joe lost two out of three To the brilliant Ali But he earned many millions in wages Joe passed on in his 68th year And millions of fans shed a tear For a man of great style With a lovable smile Who put many a man on his rear barnesandnoble/w/celebrity-limericks-from-muhammad-ali-to-warren-zevon-neil-dickinson/1120806438?ean=9781460252215
