Happy Birthday: October 18, 1889 (1968): Fannie Hurst wrote 17 novels and 9 volumes of short stories over 50 years, leaving approximately one million dollars each to Brandeis and Washington Universities for professorships in creative literature. Hurst is now best known for the screen adaptations of her works, such as the 1934 film Imitation of Life and its 1959 remake, based on her novel of the same name which examined race relations.
