Happy Birthday, Paul Newman! - wherever you are making your mischief. Paul Newman, born January 26, 1925 - Shaker Heights, Ohio - died, 2008: actor, film director, entrepreneur, professional racing driver, auto racing team owner, environmentalist, social activist, and philanthropist. Hard not to like Paul - as good-hearted as he was handsome, as daring as he was talented. As he grew up Jewish not far from where I did - his legendary accomplishments were held up as a role model. His physical presence got him far, and his significant Capricorn energies (Ascendant, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter) took it the rest of the way in dedication). Honestly, i do not rank him as an uber- great actor, but more a great human being who was fun or compelling to watch in film - in the likes of Butch Cassidy, the Sting, the Color of Money, Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (opposite Liz Taylor). Mr. & Mrs. Bridge and then those lovable derelict kind of roles he perfected with his steely look, mischievous airs and gravelly voice. I particularly like him in the role of the Narrator in the 2003 version of Our Town - one of my and many peoples favorite American plays. It suited him well, and satisfied his love of local theater. He was a life long active Democrat, and put his money where his mouth was in his philanthropic Newmans Own line of dressings and goodies, - profits all going to charity. I would occasionally buy his products just cause i like him and the cause. Someday - I would like to have a version of Fig Sebrans for sale. Newman was one of the founders of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy (CECP), a membership organization of CEOs and corporate chairpersons committed to raising the level and quality of global corporate philanthropy. Newman was named the Most Generous Celebrity of 2008 by Givingback.org. He contributed $20,857,000 for the year of 2008 to the Newmans Own Foundation, which distributes funds to a variety of charities. His wife, Joann Woodward, to whom is he was faithfully married for 50 years is a consummate actress, and the two of them shared the screen a few times. Until his last years, he put his life on the line in competitive race car driving. Throughout his life, he seemed protected by harm, though losing a son. In the nameseake of one of his films - I think Somebody Up There Likes Me must have been actually the case. Perhaps, he is with them now, rusing and musing as he did here. ~WS
