Happy Birthday to Colin Clive, who is best known for his portrayal of the insane Dr. Frankenstein in Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935)! Although I consider Peter Cushing to be the ultimate Dr. Frankenstein, Clive is who immediately comes to mind when I think of the character itself. His haunting face, his manic stare, his obsessive determination to create a man with his own two hands, etc. And the great thing about his Frankenstein is that over two films, he does have a great deal of development. He eventually realizes the error of his mistakes, and even wants to start a normal life with his fiancé Elizabeth. However, he keeps getting sucked back into that world of gods and monsters! Although the films work because of Karloffs sympathetic portrayal of the monster, it also works because of the tragedy of Frankenstein as well. Clive managed to evoke such pathos that few actors have ever brought out when playing the famous doctor. Watch Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, or even both, to experience Colin Clive at his finest! Just like his famous monster, he too becomes alive! Happy B-Day Colin!
