Happy Birthday to a genuine American treasure Doug Sahm, who would have been 73 years old today. Sahm never found sustained widespread commercial success but his conjunto-soul fusion track, Shes About a Mover is one of the great pop tunes of the 60s (with an illustrious back story where the all-Texan Sir Douglas Quintet attempted to portray themselves as young British Invaders to humorously no avail). Sahm was the true musical itinerant with a love for collecting rare 45s, baseball and professional wrestling. His hep, hyper-speed patois, along with a sunny, ever present smile left a lasting impression (even if he rode the waves of lifes ups and downs like we all inevitably do) even if he is more or less regarded as a regional artist now. In many ways, I think that ever present smile is what separates Sahm for me, throughout the wide breadth of musical genres (Jerry Wexler said that he was like St. Sebastian shot up with arrows except instead of blood, a river of rich music flowed from each pore) portrayed in his musical vision.
