Happy Birthday to both Michael Caine and Billy Crystal! Last night, I checked out three excellent features and two fine experimental short films, in Sydney Pollacks Three Days of the Condor (my 2nd film by him; 1975, 9/10), The Golem (my 1st film by Carl Boese and Paul Wegener; 1920, 9/10), Puce Moment (1949) and Rabbits Moon (1950; my 3rd and 4th films by Kenneth Anger; both 8/10), and my Curtain Call, as best film of the day, the gangster epic Once Upon a Time in America (my 6th film by Sergio Leone; 1984, 10/10). Loved his homage to Robert Altman; I think Sydney Pollack paid tribute to Dario Argento in Three Days of the Condor as well, but the characters name my have been Argento from the original book, Six Days of the Condor; Im not sure on that. My Five Stars, for cinematic excellence, were very difficult to pick on such an evening, but mostly come from Leones work: --Actor: Robert De Niro (though James Woods was also great there, and Robert Redford, Cliff Robertson, Max Von Sydow and John Houseman were wonderful in Pollacks film) --Actress: Faye Dunaway (from Three Days of the Condor, though Elizabeth McGovern, Tuesday Weld and Jennifer Connelly were outstanding in Once Upon a Time in America) --Director: Sergio Leone --Cinematographer: Tonino Delli Colli (though Owen Roizmans work was great in giving a claustrophobic feel to Pollacks thriller) --Soundtrack: Ennio Morricone (though David Grusins jazzy score to Three Days of the Condor was awesome) Not sure what Ill be seeing this evening, but Im leaning towards The Tempest (Derek Jarman, 1979), Heavens Gate (Michael Cimino, 1980) and The Grapes of Death (Jean Rollin, 1978). Have a great weekend, and I hope its full of great cinematic moments for you all! Film Club! =)
