Happy Birthday today (Aug. 18) to Nigel Griggs, who came to prominence as the UK bass player for New Zealands favorite sons Split Enz, joining in 1977 at the same time as Neil Finn for the Mach II edition of the band that would shed its art rock past for new wave success; Nigel first played on 1977 Oz #18 album Dizrythmia (with single My Mistake) & 1979 Oz #24 album Frenzy (single I See Red) before 1980s True Colours shot them to international fame on the strength of Oz/Kiwi/Canuck #1, UK #12 & US #53 single I Got You; Nigel remained with the band until their 1984 dissolution, after which he joined offshoot band Schnell Fenster; he has rejoined his Enz-mates over the years for various reunions & released the solo album Sleeper in 2002…
