Happy Birthday today (Jan. 25) to Mal Green, best known as the English-born drummer for New Zealands favorite sons, Split Enz during their most successful period from 1976-81; he came onboard for 1977 album Dizrythmia & helped the group transition from quirky art rock to the hitmaking new wave sound of 1980s True Colours (including Oz & New Zealand #1, UK #12 & Canada #13 hit, I Got You); Mal & the group parted ways in 1981 after disagreements with frontman Tim Finn over the rejection of his songwriting contributions, but in 2005 he accepted an invitation to play with them at their induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame in Australia; in 2006, he rejoined Split Enz for its Australian reunion tour, sharing drumming duties with Noel Crombie; Mal currently lives in Sydney where he produces music at his own studio; he also drums for & acts as a mentor to Sydney band, Gethsemane…
