Happy Birthday today (Nov. 18) to Kirk Hammett, best known as the lead guitarist & a songwriter with cornerstone US heavy metal band, Metallica; their fast tempos, instrumentals & aggressive musicianship placed them as one of the founding big four of thrash metal, alongside Slayer, Megadeth & Anthrax; they achieved substantial commercial success in 1991 with their self-titled 5th LP (The Black Album), which debuted at US #1; Kirk joined the group in 1983, replacing the dismissed Dave Mustaine; prior to that, he had formed & named Exodus in 1980, an influential band in the Bay Area thrash movement; he is noted for his extensive use of wah-wah pedal in his solos & for having his picking hand taped up; in 2003, Rolling Stone ranked Kirk #11 on their list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time; in 2009, he was ranked #15 in Joel McIvers book The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists; Metallica was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 2009; in 2012, Kirk released his first book, Too Much Horror Business, a collection of photos detailing his lifelong love of monster movies & horror memorabilia…
