Happy Canada Day and Happy Independence Day. On July 1st we celebrated the day in an act of reconciliation, we chopped and hauled and chopped and hauled wood for the sweat lodge. I have learnt so much from having two true full-blood Canadians for parents, a Nehiyaw Mom and a white Pops (for a complete lack of a better term, since white only describes a little bit about my Dad, and doesnt capture at all the little red raspberry mole he has on his back, for example, or his grasp of Nehiyaw language, did you know he is called Moosum by his grandkids? Or that he hitchhiked across Canada with his long hippy hair. Did you know many of my ancestors on my Moms side are Metis? being Canadian is complicated and beautiful, and damn lucky too) So personally I celebrate. Because the ancestors and Elders I have learnt from believed in a shared future, probably not the one we have now, (because clean air matters, animals matter, water matters, indigenous rights matter, and equitable lives for all matters) but one where we work together to make things better for all beings.
