Happy Faculty Friday! As per the request of our anthropology enthusiasts out there, this week we are featuring Dr. Scott Simmons current research project in Belize! Since 2010 Dr. Simmons has been collaborating with University College London and Galen University to investigate the dynamics of trade and interaction at a coastal Mayan trading port dating to 100-200BC. The site is located on Ambergris Caye, Belize. One of our very own Anthropology graduates and past club President, Elizabeth Saunders, has even been a part of this research! The collaboration between Galen University and UNCW also resulted in the development of the “Ambassadors to the Past” program, which involves connecting local students to their country’s Mayan heritage. (FUN FACT: Ambergris Caye is also home to San Pedro, the fourth sister-city of Wilmington, NC! AND is also featured in a song by Madonna! Quick! Name that song!
