Happy Friday, everyone! I wouldnt dare rub it in that I have Fridays off, especially this week when all of my teacher friends are back at work. :) Four years ago I traded my summer vacations for 3 1/2 day work weeks year-round, but I admit I still have fleeting moments of envy when my friends have their summers off. Those moments pass quickly when I remember those back-to-school blues, facing the long hours and mounds of paperwork for 190 days. Teaching can be a thankless job at times, and teachers are first to be blamed for student failure. Honestly, in my 30+ years of working in the schools, I would estimate that nearly 99% of the teachers with whom I worked were in it for the children and wanted their students to succeed. Teachers donate countless hours of unpaid service to their profession, and they deserve to have the parents and communitys fullest support. When a student isnt succeeding, there are so many other factors in play. To say there will be No Child Left Behind is an impossible goal when many children arrive at the station with more baggage than their little hands can carry. That being said, I do have one word of encouragement for all of my educator friends, Hang in there! Retirements worth it! Im thankful for my career in the public and federal schools because all of that service prepared me for my dream job today where I do real, authentic speech therapy, one-on-one, in childrens homes, working side-by-side with parents and families, teaching them to do what I do. Every day when Im playing with my children, Im the one receiving the greater blessing, as well as a major grandmother fix. Hearing life through the voice of a child is the sweetest music to my ears! Often when Im laughing and doing silly stuff with my little ones to get them to talk, I can hear Steve Martin singing in my head, I get paid for doing this!!! Finding something you love to do and getting paid to do it...PRICELESS!
