Happy Hanukkah! The Festival of Lights begins tonight. We celebrate the survival of Judaism during a time when the sophisticated, educated elite tried to sell us the idea that our faith was outdated and unnecessary, and if we persisted in practicing it, theyd kill us. My pals, theyre gone and we live! Heres a great version of Meghan Trainors song All About That Bass (which I thought I discovered last week on the radio, to which my kids replied, Dad! Thats like ancient history already!) The Maccabeats sing All About That Neis. Neis means miracle, and refers to the container of undefiled oil needed for the Menorah in our Holy Temple. After we won our revolutionary struggle against the Syrian Greeks, we sought to rededicate the Temple with the required eight day celebration of consecration. We only had enough oil for one night, but it miraculously burned for eight. It is often said that the real miracle was our spirit in lighting the Menorah, despite knowing that it would not last. In a world full of darkness, weve got to illumine every light we can! Enjoy!
