Happy Holidays! Christmas Day is a holiday, New Years Day is a holiday too. When I say, Happy Holidays I expect it to be taken as shorthand for wishing someone a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year in just two words. But some media pundits have got the Christian Right all cranked up on the belief that those who say Happy Holidays are somehow insulting Christian beliefs and values. Those who have bought into this line of thinking must seriously question their dangerous susceptibility to media influence. I also say Happy Holidays to people because in public, I want to be sensitive to all the religious fictions people hold surrounding the day of winter solstice. To be honest, my Jesus was a gay black man who was killed because he was too smart and too idealistic for the religious fundamentsalists of his time. But I am not upset by the fact that many Americans like their Baby Jesus to be white, just as long as their Christmas spirit makes them loving to all and hostile to none, just as Jesus would want.
