Happy Holidays with Alpine Holiday Services: A Bernese Oberland Christmas? Best wishes to all our guests and browsers for a very happy holiday time. In the Swiss resort of Wengen in the Bernese Oberland, Christmas is celebrated on the 24th and 25th of December, the family celebrations centering on the eve of Christmas. For most, work stops at lunch time, the fir tree is brought in and decorated, traditionally with lighted candles on its branches; presents are piled at its foot. Traditionally the Christ child brings gifts for the children. Santa Claus or Samiclaus has been and gone on the night of December 6th when special evening events with Samiclaus have become popular – Berne steam tram trip with Samiclaus, historic railway engine trip over the Brunig-Hasliberg pass near Meiringen. White lights only are put up at the beginning of December to cheer the winter season. After perhaps a day of skiing no festive occasion is complete without special eats ‘en famille’. Here in the Bernese Oberland there is no one Christmas menu, although Pastetchen or vol-au-vents stuffed with chicken, lamb or vegetable ragout might come close. Fondue Chinoise is a holiday favourite, a very thinly sliced beef served raw and cooked by each guest in a fondue pot of flavoursome vegetable broth and served with a host of different sauces, béarnaise, horseradish, mustard, chili etc. Thick slices of roast ham might be served on Boxing Day, the 26th.
