Happy Holloween from the Historic neighborhoods of Reading. Our virtual tour now takes to the corner of Clymer Street and Mineral Spring Road, a stunning home with a tale of past sorrows. Built for Philip Bissinger, owner of the Bissinger Cafe and Reading Brewing Company. The property was occupied by Mr Bissinger, his first wife Louise, and their three children ages three, six, and nine. It began with Mrs. Bissinger being asked to move from the house with two of her children by her husband due to his involvement with another woman. Louise Bissinger , depressed by her failing marriage and the thought of her children being raised by another woman, took matters into her own hands. Gathering her three children she took them for a walk along the Union Canal, carrying a basket and collecting stones along the way.On that day August 17th, 1875, at lock Number 49 she clutched her three children to her side along with the basket of stones, jumped into the canal and all four drowned. The funeral for the family was attended by over a thousand with many in the crowd booing and hissing at Philip Bissinger for being the cause of the tragedy.
