Let them tremble when they approach our coast. wrote Jean Jeacques Dessalines in the Haitian Declaration of Independence delivered on January 1, 1804. The Revolution that led to that day resulted in the Napoleon Bonaparte giving up his imperialist quest in North America and selling the Louisiana territory to the U.S., thus doubling the size of the new country. Following the Revolution, the rebels were forced to pay indeminity to farmers who lost property in the war. Trade embargoes by other slave holding countries, famously including the U.S. under President Thomas Jefferson. They didnt want their own slaves to get any ideas. The fledgling country continued to suffer well into the 20th century largely due to this de-facto punishment. #salute #Ayiti
