Happy Independence Week to my fellow Americans! Heres one of my 82 Facebook wall posts this week to acknowledge its passage. In late 2000, I felt excited that we Americans had finally (narrowly) elected a Republican President again. I heard that he was more conservative than his father. I hoped that hed continue the so-called Reagan Revolution---and do so more easily with a Republican Congress. I felt eager to enjoy his promise of a more humble foreign policy, as well as school vouchers. But, over the following eight years, I got Medicare Part D, a doubled Department of Education, violations of civil liberties, unjust wars, continental integration, and a host of other grievances. Afterward, his successor promised hope and change on the campaign trail, but then delivered even more of the same. And Ive learned that we Americans will never stop getting even more of the same unless we start doing things differently, including in both nominating and electing candidates. As Ronald Reagan once quipped, Status quo, you know, is Latin for the mess were in.
