Happy Indian Arrival Day to all the people of Trinidad and Tobago. Those of us who share East Indian ancestry have truly contributed to a fascinating and wondrous little country. It is a privilege to have grown amidst such diversity. Respect as well to our ancestors who arrived from other spaces, and to the most forgotten people of all: the people that many of our fore-parents met when they first came here. It is fashionable to say cherish the anthem and the flag and the doubles and the breadfruit oil-down and the musical instruments that we now share...but these two islands existed before all of that; before many of us. So as we celebrate the arrivers let us also remember those who were already here, and let us also cherish those things that they cherished: the ocean, the fishes, the wildlife, the greenery, the hillsides, and the joys of living in harmony with our environment. Its a beautiful day my friends...dont waste the opportunity of another day of life.
