Happy Islamic New Year to all! 1436 years ago, our Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) migrated from his hometown of Mecca, where he and his community of early Muslims were persecuted and oppressed, onto a town called Yathrib. The previously warring tribes of Yathrib, the Aws and the Khazraj, had embraced Islam and became united in welcoming the Prophet (pbuh) to his new home. In honour of the Messenger of God (pbuh), Yathribs name was later changed to Madinat Al Nabi (The City of the Prophet [pbuh]) or Al Madina Al Munawarra (The Illuminated City). Today, in English it is commonly referred to simply as Medina. The story of the Hijrah (or migration) of the Prophet (pbuh), and his life in Medina are full of important lessons for us today. We should take the time to study these aspects of his history, or Seerah.
