Happy July 4th everyone! Interesting fact: At the University of Michigans Orson Welles archive there is an early 1950s letter from Maurice Bernstein to Welles, pitching the idea of a biographical film of the great American bandleader John Phillip Sousa. The letter indicates that Bernstein and his wife Hazel had already written a complete screenplay for the project, and were shopping the idea around to others in Hollywood as well. Welles apparently never showed sufficient interest in the idea, but a Hollywood film on Sousa was made soon afterwards, with Clifton Webb as Sousa, and co-starring Robert Wagner. lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/ihas/html/sousa/images/sousa-home-small.jpg
