Happy May Day! May 1st is the official start of the sea turtle nesting season here at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. As the nearby ocean water warms up, females from up to five different species of sea turtles will make the nighttime journey onto the sandy beaches to dig a nest, lay eggs, cover the eggs back up, and return to the ocean—a progress that can take a couple of hours! Heres a rare view of a female loggerhead that actually came out of the water in the morning last year instead of during the dark hours of night (https://flickr/photos/capehatterasnps/14031576536/). She dug one of the 254 sea turtle nests that we had along the seashore in 2013.
